The National Age Group 2009 was held on the 17th – 20th of March 2009 at Orchid Country Club. It is an annual tournament open to all students who are either Singapore citizens, Permanent Residents or foreigners. It is a competition where participants compete in four different categories of age: under 12, under 15, under 18 and under 21.
This year, RP sent three teams to represent Team Republic in the tournament: two men’s teams and one women’s team. The tournament was held over four days, where bowlers play four games each day for the first three days in the singles, doubles andteam event. The scores accumulated over three days will then be added to get the all-events result. The fourth day is the masters event where only the top sixteen men and top twelve women from the all-events games compete for the championships.
Our bowlers competed in the under-21 category, which is the most competitive category. Singapore’s national team as well as the other polytechnics also competed in this group.
Despite the pressure from the competitors, our bowlers kept their cool and played their own game. After an intensive four-day competition, Team RP emerged in third spot. The team which consisted of Melvin Swee, Edmund Loo, Jonathan Lim and Aaron Wan bowled a combined total pinfall of 3126, an average of 195.4. In the women’s division, our team put up a tough fight and came in at 5th position.
In the Masters Event, four bowlers from Team Republic made the cut,. The bowlers included Melvin Swee, Aaron Wan, Nur Syazwani and Clara Lim. With the strong field of players in the competition, qualifying for the Masters Event was a huge accomplishment for all of them. Competing with their best foot forward, , the final results saw Melvin Swee and Aaron coming in 14th and 16th position and Clara Lim and Nur Syawani coming in 8th and 11th position.
Overall our bowlers did well, hitting their targets set before the tournament. This will give them confidence and motivation to train harder for upcoming tournaments. The National Age Group Bowling Championship 2009 was a good learning experience. With such exposure, the whole team will learn from the lessons and strive for greater success in the upcoming tournaments.
